Many people take the new year as an opportunity to detox their bodies. (Think: jumping into sober January, tossing out leftover treats from the holidays, and getting back into a regular fitness regimen.) In the spirit of kicking off 2022 in a mentally grounded way, it can also be a perfect time for your clients to detox their homes and living spaces.

Green Living: How to Detoxify Your Home

Since the new year is all about fresh starts, the home is a solid place to begin. January is an ideal time to remind your clients that health isn’t just about what they eat. It also encompasses their mindset, the people they spend time with, the products they use and how they craft their environment.

Health Coach Institute’s Top 6 Tips for Home Detox

Detoxifying the home is truly beneficial to physical, mental and emotional health, so here are our favorite ways wellness coaches can encourage their clients to detoxify their living spaces.

1. Switch to Natural Cleaning Products

Cleaning products in the home can expose your clients, and their loved ones, to numerous chemicals that can be harmful to health. From skin irritation to respiratory problems, and even increased risk of cancer, some household cleaning products are bad news. Work with your clients to make the switch to natural cleaning products that do not contain irritants. These products are readily available online or in most health food stores. Or, for a more budget-friendly option, there are many natural solutions that can be made at home with simple ingredients such as soap, baking soda, and vinegar.

2. Use a Water Filter

Remind your clients that their body is made up of about 60 percent water and that hydration is one of the most important ways to support health. But not all water is equal. A water filter can help clear any metals or chemicals that might be lurking in their tap water. They can also request a water quality report from their community water supplier or purchase at-home water testing kits that can tell them what might be in their water, and if they need a specific filtration system in their homes.

3. Decorate with Plants to Filter Toxins in the Air

Plants aren’t just pretty to look at, they can also support health in a number of ways. Plants can help clean toxins out of the air and can be major mood boosters. Researchers have found that the benefits of having indoor plants around range from reducing pollutants in the home to increasing one’s performance, health and comfort. According to Country Living, snake plants, spider plants, Chinese evergreen and Kentia palm are among a long list of decorative indoor plants that are the best for purifying air in the home. If your clients have pets or small children, make sure to opt for plants that are non-toxic if accidentally ingested.

4. Increase Natural Sunlight

Work with your clients to find ways to let more sunlight into the home. Not only is sunlight a great source of vitamin D, it can also help clean the house (seriously!). In one study, researchers found that exposure to sunlight could help kill bacteria in the home. A few ways to increase sunlight in a space can be to clean windows, remove objects from the sills, clear away plants from outside the windows and to buy blinds that allow sunlight to seep into the area.

5. Get Rid of Clutter

Clearing clutter out of every corner of your home can help set your clients up for success in the new year. There is evidence that the environment in which we live and work can have important impacts on stress and anxiety levels, sleep quality, cognition and decision making. Work with your clients to encourage them to declutter their pantries, closets, and work space. Have them take note of any health improvements that they might feel once their space is organized. Who knows, they may even turn this healthy practice into a sustainable long-term habit.

6. Freshen the Air with Essential Oils

Traditional air fresheners contain chemicals that can irritate the eyes, skin and throat. Researchers have also found that fragranced products can cause health concerns like respiratory distress and migraines. Essential oils, on the other hand, deliver mostly positive benefits like anti-inflammatory and stress reduction properties that lead to lower anxiety levels and better sleep. To harness the healing power of plant-based essences, encourage your clients to ditch their old air fresheners and opt for essential oil diffusers instead.

Holistic wellness takes into account every aspect of a person’s life, including the space in which they live. And there’s no better time than the new year to help your clients declutter, detoxify, and rejuvenate their home environment so they can start 2022 with a clean slate—literally.
